Personal requirements
- Keep nails clean and short. Jewellery is not allowed
- White approved fighting mitts and gum shields in all kumite events is now compulsory.
- For male kumite, groin protector and for female kumite, breast guards are recommended.
- White, clean and undamaged karate gi's only. Approved badges only, club badges etc.
- Bandages allowed only with doctors pemission. Spectacles not allowed, contact lenses with doctors permission.
Gohon kumite
- Five step punching and blocking (jodan and chudan), judged by two judge system.
Ippon kumite
- Attack: Jodan Oi Tsuki, Chudan Oi Tsuki, Mae Geri Chudan, Yoko Geri Chudan, right side first then left side.
- Aka (Red) attacks first.
- Judged by two judge system for eliminations, Five judge system in finals.
- No uncontrolled attacks, counterattacks to the groin or eyes, no throws or sweeps.
Jiyu Kumite
Shobu Ippon: To win outright, one ippon or two waza-ari's
- Fighting time will be two minutes, Timekeeper will signal using bell, buzzer or gong thirty seconds from time by one burst and the end by two bursts.
- Matches decided by Shobo Ippon (one Ippon) or Sanbon Ippon (three Ippons)
- Mirror System: The referee and assistant referee take up position opposite each other and on either side of compeditors.
- Fighters identified as Aka red (red belt or ribbon tied around waist) Shiro white.
- Both fighters take up central position outside area. Bow to each other when called on move to their respective mark and face each other in Yoi position.
- Bow to the judges then each other. Wait for Hajime to start the match.
- Yame called halts the match or at the finish of the match. Fighters go back to their marks to await a descision.
- Winner: Full ippon: two waza ari's, Awasete ippon, one waza ari to nil at end of match, Hansoku to opponent, judges decision.
Scoring Areas
- Head...Neck...Chest...Abdomen...back
Fouls prohibited
- Uncontrolled attacks
- Dangerous throws
- All open hand techniques
- Attacks to the groin
- Repeated attacks to the joint regions
- Purposely causing injury
- Persistently going out of the area
- Unsporting behaviour, verbal abuse etc.
Team Kumite
- Team of three compeditors and one sub.
- Rules above apply.
- Winners decided on number of wins of individual matches. When number of winners the same, team that has scored the most ippons, awasete ippon counts as ippon win. If number of ippon wins the same, then full ippons takes precidence over awasete ippon wins. Victories won by disqualification or retirement of the opponent will be counted as full ippon wins. In the event of a draw, one member from each team must compete in an extra match.
Extra Match
- Both individual and team matches will be for a further one minute after which a decision must be made.
Japanese Terms
- Shobu Ippon: Command to start a one point match Aka: Red
- Hajime: Start Shiro: White
- Yame: Stop Aka / Shiro No Kachi: Red / White wins
- Tsuzukite Hajime: Resume match Hikewaki: Draw
- Ippon: Full point. Aiuche: Simultaneous techniques landed same time.
- Waza ari: Half point Awasete ippon: Two waza-ari's recognised as ippon
- Hansoku: Disqualification Hansoku chui: Foul official warning
Match Area (Jogai) Escaping outside match area
Once: Private warning Jogai Keikoku......Twice: Official warning Jogai Chui.......Three times: Disqualification Jogai Hansoku
Kata
Individuals
- Elimination Kata set by judges.
- Finals: Kata of choice, must be different from eliminations.
- Elimination matches: Flag or Points system.
- Final matches: Points system.
Team Kata
- Three compeditors to a team.
- Both elimination and finals set by compeditors.
- Eimination and final kata's must be different.
- Judged by points system.
